SALT LAKE CITY — Your eyelash technician went through two years of cosmetology school, but a Utah lawmaker says three months of training is enough.
State Sen. David Hinkins, R-Ferron, is running a bill that creates a licensing process specifically for Utah eyelash and eyebrow technicians.
“Right now, they do hair and all that sort of stuff [in cosmetology school],” Hinkins told Utah’s Morning News. “All they want to do is specialize in eyelashes and eyebrows.”
To receive a license as an eyelash or eyebrow technician, applicants would be required to attend 100 hours of school in their field.
“There’s also an apprenticeship program for [future technicians] to shorten it up, so they can earn a wage,” said Hinkins. “Maybe in their houses, or even at parlors.”
Apprentices would have to prove that they have 125 hours of training under a licensed instructor.
For comparison, a cosmetology license in Utah currently requires 1,600 hours of training.
Hinkins said he hopes this bill saves technicians money that would have gone toward college that maybe someone can’t afford.
The average cosmetology school in Utah costs $14,408, according to College Tuition Compare.
Hinkins estimated state Senators could vote on the bill by next week. For now, it remains in the Senate Business and Labor Committee.
